Bill was born July 14, 1952, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to Robert and Caroline Turnbull. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School and later from the University of Dayton. He began working for the federal government in 1976. During his more than 30 years as a Safety Manager for the U.S. Navy, Bill had the opportunity to travel the world with his family and friends. He loved taking in the history and beauty of each place he visited and, of course, sampling the local libations. Beer in the U.S., sake in Japan, wine in Italy, and Irish whiskey in Ireland.
Music was a big part of Bill’s life. He was a dedicated volunteer for the Catholic Church, playing guitar and sometimes directing the choirs. He played with the Jam Band at the Senior Center, served on the board, and sang with the Bellingham Community Chorus. Throughout his life he enjoyed teaching guitar, cooking, reading science fiction, playing Uno with his grandchildren, and tending to his hydroponic garden of herbs and vegetables.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Anne Turnbull; daughter, Sarah Turnbull (husband Jared), and their children, Connor and Ian; son, Kevin Turnbull (wife Chiemi), and their children, Kazuma and Ema; and brother, Al Turnbull (wife Ceal).
Bill will be remembered for his dedication to the Catholic faith and his love of family, friends, and music.
An informal vigil prayer service with a time for sharing will be held on Wednesday, September 2 at 5:00 p.m. at Westford Funeral Home (1301 Broadway, Bellingham).
