Shirley Mae Nims at 100 years of age passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham on September 26, 2025. As a child she grew up on an idyllic farm in the beautiful Acme Valley with her parents Alice and Kenneth Howell and six siblings, all of whom she outlived. Through the years many stories of play and mischief were recounted with joy and laughter at family gatherings, remembering those early years.
With the onset of WWII Shirley was an Inspector of parachutes, while her high school sweetheart and Fiancé served with the U. S. Navy in the Pacific. She married Robert Nims December 15, 1945, her husband of 70 years, who then preceded her in death. She was a loving mother to her three children, Sandra Martindale (Lloyd), Kenneth Nims (Cindy), Jeffrey Nims (Rena) as well as five grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Prior to her retirement, Shirley enjoyed serving customers in sales at Junes Apparel and Hiltons Apparel in Bellingham. She sang in the choir as a member of Calvery Temple Church and Life Church. As a person of faith, she faced the inevitable challenges of loss and grief in life, always with an uplifting, positive attitude in the joy of knowing Jesus, her Lord and Savior. She was an example of strength and left a fine legacy for her family. Her presence in life will be greatly missed.
Shirley was a beautiful person who loved laughter, enjoyed life to the fullest, and followed the Seahawks as a fan. She often recited poems and stories in complete detail. Recently enjoying her 100th Birthday Celebration with family and friends, she was vigorous and in the moment. She carried a mischievous streak, which she successfully passed on.
At her request a private graveside family service will be held at Saxon Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Whatcom Hospice.
