Bellingham

Margaret Evelyn (Greenwood) Thoreson, a cherished sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Bellingham, WA. Born on July 4, 1953, in Pascagoula, MS, Margaret lived a life filled with love, adventure, and heartfelt friendships. A 1971 graduate of Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge, LA, she grew up surrounded by Southern warmth and values. Her journey took a transformative turn when she met her greatest love, Mikal Thoreson. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and traveling the world, moving from Baton Rouge to Eagle River, AK, and later settling in Bellingham, WA, where Margaret found some of her closest friends, and a community she held dear.

Margaret is survived by her beloved sister, Nancy (Russell) Whitehead; sister-in-law, Susan Thoreson; brother-in-law Randy (Val) Thoreson; her nieces, Amy (Barry) Crawford, Anissa (Gary) Marino, and Clarity Thoreson; nephews Joshua (Heather) Whitehead, Carl Thoreson, and Eric Hines; great-nieces, Caroline (Cole) Mitchell, Madison Whitehead, Harper and Addison Wehrenberg, and great-nephews, Hayden Whitehead and Camp Marino, who all lovingly called her “Martney.” She is also survived by her adored pets, Louis, Miss Beasley, and Ragnarr, who brought her endless joy and companionship and have been adopted by wonderful families. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mikal Thoreson, and her parents, Nita Jean David and Earl Greenwood.

Margaret had a big heart, and her love for family and friends ran deep. Margaret will be remembered for her free spirit, kindness, and the joy she shared with everyone around her.

Special gratitude goes to Whatcom Hospice, her special nurse, Carrie, and her devoted caregivers, Carina Barragan and Nicole Stacey, for their compassionate care.
