Listen to Obituary

John Daniel Lenington was born on February 27, 1945, in Yakima, Washington, and passed away on October 21, 2025, in Bellingham, Washington, after a long illness.

He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn; his sons, Matt and Nick (Rachel); his beloved granddaughters, Grace and Kate; his brothers, Jim, Ted, and Dave; and many nephews and nieces.

Born to Virginia “Freddie” and Jesse “Dan” Lenington, John was the eldest of four boys. He spent his formative years in Yakima, attending several high schools as his father’s work took the family to different towns. He graduated from Great Falls High School in Great Falls, Montana.

After high school, John attended the University of Montana and the College of Great Falls, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later completed two master’s degrees in education and counseling, a reflection of his lifelong commitment to learning and helping others.

John dedicated his career to education, spending 30 years as a vocational guidance counselor at Bellingham Technical College. He helped countless students discover their strengths and build meaningful careers. His kindness, patience, and practical wisdom left a lasting impact on everyone he mentored.

A man of remarkable skill and ingenuity, John could build or fix almost anything. When his sons were teenagers, he led the family in constructing the home where they still live today, an enduring testament to his craftsmanship and love.

John’s greatest joy was his family. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, whether they were out crabbing, laughing in the kitchen, or simply talking about life. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and golfing. A voracious reader and lifelong student of history, John’s curiosity and thoughtful nature enriched every conversation.

He will be remembered for his warmth, intelligence, quiet strength, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Dementia Support Northwest
