John F. Flanagan III

John F. Flanagan III, 76, of Bellingham, passed away on August 15, 2026, with his sons at his bedside.

John III was born on February 13, 1950, to John II and Virla Flanagan, and was the oldest of three boys. He grew up in Bellevue and joined the United States Army in 1967. He eventually served with the 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry in Vietnam in 1969.

Upon returning home, John attended Bellevue Community College before transferring to Washington State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business. It was at WSU that John met his wife of nearly 43 years, Cathy. Together, they had three children and raised their family in and around Bellevue.

In 2007, John and Cathy moved to Bellingham to get away from the busyness of the Seattle area and enjoy a quieter life.

John is survived by his brother, Steve Flanagan; his three children, John IV, Becky, and Stephen; and his four grandchildren, Helena, Julia, John V, and Aiden. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy, and his younger brother, Thomas Flanagan.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
