Joel “Joe” Edward Hile, formerly of Bellingham, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, at the American Lake VA Medical Center in Lakewood, WA, where he spent his last 7 years.
Joel was born on April 25, 1936, in New Haven, Connecticut, to Edward and Rose Hile, but spent his childhood in an orphanage from age five following the death of his father - an experience that helped shape his compassion and resilience through years of transition and transformation.
He served in the United States Air Force for 24 years, including two years in Vietnam, retiring with several years of experience leading the airmen in his squadron as First Sergeant.
Following his military career, Joel continued a life of service - supporting and counseling those struggling with addiction and neglect and giving back through volunteer work in his community. In the years that followed, his work centered around eldercare, running assisted living facilities, and he and wife, Patricia, were active with service animals for the Canine Companions organization.
A devoted husband, father, and friend, Joel cherished time with his family and the company of the beloved dogs who were always part of his home.
Music was one of Joel’s greatest joys - he loved to sing and dance. After Patricia’s passing, he found comfort in karaoke nights, where he made new friends and found joy and connection through music.
He is survived by his children, Joel, Theresa, and Steven; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His kindness, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private family service with military honors will be held. He will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, honoring his lifelong spirit of generosity.
