Gene Hewitson, age 81, passed away peacefully at Whatcom Hospice House on Sunday, May 11, 2025. He was born in London, England on October 12, 1943. The family moved to Washington when he was three years old and he was raised in Bellingham. A proud veteran, Gene served in the US Navy. He worked for many years at Liberty Equipment and Supply in Bellingham.
Gene was a kind man and loved helping others. As a member of Sacred Heart, he was an active volunteer with Hope House, Knights of Columbus, and St. Vincent de Paul. He also volunteered at the Bellingham Blood Bank.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Thea Hewitson, and Mary Ellen’s son, Jon Hasenoehrl.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Hewitson; sons, Scott (Jodi) Hewitson and John (Lisa) Hewitson; daughter, Shannon (Paul) Winkler; sister, Denise Perigo (companion Doug Martinson); Mary Ellen’s sons, Steven (Stacie) Hasenoehrl and Jim (Laura) Hasenoehrl; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, (1110 14th St.) in Bellingham at 11:00AM on Thursday, May 22 followed by a graveside committal at Bayview Cemetery.
