Frederick G. Flemming

Frederick Gerard Flemming, age 94, died at his home in Bellingham on July 7, 2026, following a long illness.

Born in Juniper, New Brunswick, on October 6, 1931, Fred attended Rothesay Collegiate School in Rothesay, New Brunswick. After graduating, he attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, graduating in 1953.

A member of the Bowdoin College Sports Hall of Fame, Fred was an accomplished athlete. He had the unique distinction of lettering in four major varsity sports: baseball, football, track, and basketball. His true passion, however, was baseball, in which he earned All-American honors. Following his graduation from Bowdoin, he was signed by the Detroit Tigers and spent four years, from 1953 to 1956, playing professional baseball in their minor league system.

After his baseball career, Fred enjoyed a long and successful career in commercial real estate development. As an executive, he helped develop major high-rise buildings in New York, Montreal, Dallas, Seattle, Vancouver, and other cities. Later in his career, he developed retail centers and residential projects throughout Washington and Oregon before retiring.

Fred was a charismatic and outgoing man with a larger-than-life personality. He was simply great fun to be around. His love of sports remained with him throughout his life, especially his enduring passion for baseball. He took great joy in following his favorite professional teams and cherished watching his grandsons play as they grew up.

Fred’s marriage to his wife, Helen “Bunny” Flemming, was a true love story. Happily married for decades, they found their greatest joy in spending time with their large extended family of children and grandchildren in Bellingham, Seattle, and Palm Desert, California, where they enjoyed many winters together.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Fred’s caregiver, Desiree Ames, whose loving care, compassion, and unwavering dedication brought comfort, dignity, and joy to Fred during the final years of his life. Her kindness and genuine affection meant more to Fred, and to the entire family, than words can express.

The family is also deeply grateful to Dr. Mark Hoffman for his exceptional medical care, compassion, and steadfast support. His professionalism, kindness, and commitment provided not only outstanding care for Fred but also reassurance and comfort to the family throughout his illness.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Bunny; his 10 children and stepchildren; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private family gathering will be held.
