Born in Spokane, WA, to parents, Lynn “Art” and Sherry Johnson, Charlyn passed away in Bellingham, WA, on February 17, 2026.
She was a valedictorian of her 1999 graduating class from East Valley High School, as well as the first EVHS student to earn a Spokane Scholar award (foreign languages). Charlyn graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in Spanish (cum laude) and Speech and Intercultural Communications (summa cum laude). Charlyn served one year volunteering with World Teach as an English teacher in Antofogasta, Chile. She returned several times over the years to visit her Chilean host family, the Polancos, and became the godmother to their youngest daughter, Antonia. Charlyn earned a master’s in teaching from Whitworth University. She accepted her first teaching assignment as a Spanish teacher at R.A. Long High School in Longview, WA, where she also coached JV volleyball.
She was introduced to her future husband, Kyle Dalvit, by a mutual friend in the fall of 2010. They were married in 2012, and the couple settled in Bellingham. Charlyn began teaching high school Spanish at Mount Vernon High School. Charlyn was a devoted Catholic, wife, mother, friend, and teacher. She loved travelling and experiencing other cultures and cuisines. A big part of the fun was planning and educating her daughters ahead of time. One of her favorite hobbies was fishing. She loved natural science and animals.
Charlyn fought a courageous two-year battle against stage IV stomach cancer. During this time, she and her family were able to make two more big trips: a California road trip, including visits to Yosemite National Park and Disneyland; and a trip to Chile, including visits with the Polancos and to Easter Island.
Survivors include her husband, Kyle Dalvit; daughters, Evlyne (age 8) and Aleria (age 5); parents, Lynn “Art” and Sherry Johnson; sister, Renee (Scott) Shaw, and their children Ben, Esme, and Eden.
