Shirley M. Mathes

Shirley (Rummells) Mathes, 95, passed away in Bellingham, Washington September 3, 2014. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa followed by a memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church beginning at 2 p.m. Online condolences can be sent to her family at www.gayandciha.com. Shirley was born April 3, 1919, on the family farm near West Branch; daughter of William H. and Mable (Endsley) Rummells and graduated from high school in Iowa City. On September 1, 1939, she married R.W. "Bill" Mathes in Glendale, California. He preceded her in death, on June 11, 2005. She was also preceded by her sisters, Fern Hunzinger, Gladys Glaspey, Fay Hurt and Ruth Slach and brothers, Mervin Rummells, Harold Rummells and Donald Rummells. She is survived by brothers, Philip Rummells of Cedar Rapids and Gene Rummells of Evening Shade, Arkansas as well as sister-in-law, Norma Wells of Iowa City and numerous nieces and nephews.
